Coloured Stones Opal

Opal

The word “opal” derives from opallios, the Greek term for “to see a change of colour”. With their shimmering, rainbow-like tones, they are known for their unique play-of-colour. A gemstone that has long held intrigue, Pliny the Elder wrote of opals:
“In them you shall see the living fire of ruby, the glorious purple of the amethyst, the sea-green of the emerald, all glittering together in an incredible mixture of light”.
Among the various types of this gemstone, Mikimoto prefers Australian black opals with their opulent play-of-colour, as well as Mexican fire opals and water opals featuring a three-dimensional colour play effect that creates depth.
